I recently saw a JC Penny ad on TV that featured Ellen DeGeneres – I thought it was funny (and I love Ellen) and my Mom told me that she was there new spokeswoman but that there was some recent controversy over this. I’m not sure if I am just out of the loop on this one but I looked around on the Internet and saw that this was, in fact, true. A group called “one million mom’s” is outraged that JC Penny has decided to use a gay woman in their ad campaign. Some of the comments that they have issued are completely absurd as they are trying to get JC Penny to pick a new spokesperson. In the end, JC Penny stuck by and supported their decision.

After reading some news articles I took a look at one million mom’s website and have to say, it was pretty funny. A good portion of the website is devoted to trying to get ad campaigns pulled and asking others to email various companies asking them to stop. However, after reading through a bunch of these requests (which are very funny) I noticed that some of them have actually been successful. Including some companies pulling their ads when Modern Family is on due to profanity used by a young cast member.

Here is the one million mom's website:

  1. I had heard about this controversy and I'm so glad that JC Penney stuck by their decision to keep her as a spokesperson. I'm a big fan of hers as well, and I don't see any logical reason why she would tarnish the JC Penney image/brand. On her show she commented on the issue and also showed what some facebook comments were (some on her page and some on JC Penney's page) which said things like "I guess I have to start shopping at JC Penney's!" and "JC Penney is a more respected company now because this issue took place and their handling of it."

  2. I also heard of this controversy, and I am glad that Ellen is the new spokesperson. I see Ellen as a funny, iconic spokesperson and I hope that these marketing attempts will someday not be effected by homophobic views. Have you seen Ellen in her CoverGirl commercials? I think that Ellen makes a fantastic spokesperson for CoverGirl because she is such an icon to so many different target markets. Children know her as "Dory" from Finding Nemo, Parents know her from her various different television shows and talk shows, and she also stands as a successful person in the Homosexual community that inspires others to embrace who they are and achieve their dreams. Ellen is a great spokesperson in my eyes!
